Basics Overhaul

As you know, Jack and I don't live in the same city, (she's in Houston and I am in Austin) but we got to see each other this week! We thought it would be fun to do a post showing what we do with clients in the comfort of their own homes with classic pieces they already own. We are going to show you how to take your closet basics to the next level with a few simple tricks.

You know that button down you own that seems so boring? We are going to demonstrate how to jazz it up for daytime AND take it into night with a pair of skinny jeans.

Before all the jazzing...

Before all the jazzing...

Here is Jack in a classic blue button down shirt and skinny jeans, both from Gap. There is nothing "wrong" with this look, but with some seriously simple changes, your outfit can become more flattering, more put together and chic!

First, roll the jeans a few times at the bottom to show just a little ankle which  makes your legs appear longer. The best way to do this without your jeans looking bulky, is to fold one large cuff and then fold that cuff in half (Jack taught me that!).

Next do "the front tuck" with your shirt. This needs to look messy and not structured. The way I like to do this is to tuck the "buttons" in and a little bit of the surrounding  fabric, then tug on it a little so it doesn't look so perfect. Make sense? This helps bring in and define your waist.

Next, unbutton one more button (unless this step is going to reveal too much!)

Then, roll your sleeves up! I like to do this the same way as the jeans. One big roll above the elbow, then roll that one in half and tug at the edges a little.

Finally,  put on some lip gloss, earrings and a simple necklace. Voilà!! You no longer look like you are wearing a school uniform! All of these simple changes are super flattering.

Ok, so now let's say you have been running errands all day or worn this look to the office on a casual Friday, and your girlfriend calls and asks if you want to go grab dinner and drinks. With just a few simple steps you can take this look into night!

All we did here is change out the flats for pair of heels, switched the long chain for  a statement necklace (same designer but similar), unbuttoned one button at the top, put Jack's hair up in a easy messy bun, and added a clutch! It really took less than five minutes for this major transformation.

What is so great about both of these looks, is that you probably already own a lot of these pieces. All you have to do is work your closet! These super simple tips transform your basics into a more flattering, put together look that you can take from day to night!
