In my everyday life, a paper bag is used for a sack lunch, groceries, food drives, etc. But in the fashion world, paper bag refers to a type of waistband. This type of waistband can be spotted everywhere right now, and can be a fun, relaxed addition to your wardrobe.
The paper bag waistband is usually cinched with a tie belt. The pants, shorts, or skirt will have pleats and extra material above the cinched tie. They sit higher up on your waist, emphasizing an hour glass figure. They can help add volume and proportion to a more straight figure and can be forgiving to a more voluptuous figure. No matter your body type, they should hit right at the smallest part of your waist...super flattering! Instead of thinking 80's mom jean, think classic Katherine Hepburn style with a menswear feel if you are considering the style.
Because the paper bag look is a lot on its own, I try to keep the rest of my look fairly clean and simple. I don't want to add anymore volume, so a fitted tank or tee is chic and keeps the lines clean. Because of the higher waist, it makes wearing a more "cropped"-style shirt doable, classy and keeps you covered.
Anytime I choose a more menswear inspired, relaxed cut, I like to go dainty or add a little sparkle with my jewelry. I know some gals don't require a feminine touch, and can easily get away with an oxford loafer or slip on tennis shoes, but I need a little girly added in the mix. I always go with a simple sandal, flat or pointed toe heel. They all look great with this style.
I found some super cute paper bag style pants, shorts, and skirts that are in stores now. Just click on the pic below for the details!
