Like baseball, Coca-cola, Mickey Mouse, and the Backstreet Boys, denim blue jeans are an American classic. This staple hangs in all of our closets, and we wear them EVERYWHERE. But purchasing a new pair of jeans has become so much more than, "Sweety, can you pick me up a new pair of 501's?" There are thousands of brands, cuts, washes, colors, distressing, pockets, rhinestones, stitching, and price tags. IT. IS. OVERWHELMING. What happened to the days of a simple jean purchase? What are these denim designers trying to do to us? How is a gal to know what denim combo is right for her? Well, it's a process...a long, dressing room drama-filled, size switching, stack-of-no's process.
But there is hope for those denim blues! We are going to weave through the jean jungle together one blog post at a time and, in the end, step out looking svelte, with a perkier backside, feeling good and muffin-top free!
We will start with one of the most popular new styles over the past couple of years called the Boyfriend jean. It fits just as you would imagine, like you picked up your boyfriend's (or husband's) baggy pair of jeans and slipped them on. They might be ripped and distressed and will certainly be a bit over-sized in the back, have larger pockets, and a button fly. But to take these masculine jeans and turn them into a more flattering and feminine look can get a bit tricky. So, leave it to the ever-changing denim world to create the Girlfriend jean.
The Girlfriend jean is similar to the Boyfriend jean but they took a lot of the guesswork out of trying to make a masculine cut work for a woman's body. Although there is still ample leg room, its a slimmer, more stream-lined, polished cut. The Girlfriend, sometimes called the Slouchy Skinny or Slim Boyfriend, is a straight leg cut with a slight taper towards the end. The style sits a little higher on your waist and helps hide that pesky muffin-top (sweet!). The Girlfriend has certainly become my new denim boyfriend.
I love that I can pair my Girlfriend jeans with my vintage Backstreet Boys tee (that never goes out of style) for a more casual look. Or, wear them with a fitted jacket and heels for a girl's night out. The key to styling these jeans is to go for something a little more fitted on top. Because the style is a more relaxed fit, you want to show your shape somewhere. This style tends to have a soft, worn-in vintage feel. In other words, they are comfortable. BONUS! Rolling the jeans up and allowing a bit of your ankle to show, makes you look longer and leaner. The versatility of these jeans allows you to wear virtually every type of shoe with them; booties, flats, strappy sandals, and heels all look great! The best news about this style is they allow "everybody [to] rock [their] body." This is a style of jean that every woman can wear. And if shorts aren't your thing, this is a perfect, more stylish alternative to a capri pant as it starts getting warmer outside.
The Girlfriend is an excellent style to add to your personal denim collection. You will have less fitting room frustration, and walk out with a comfy and versatile pair of jeans that you can feel confident in. I have found a couple of styles that I love here, here, and for a STEAL here.
In the meantime, it's time to break up with any jeans you're doubting. It's time that they quit playing games with your denim questioning heart. We are here for your jean dilemmas. We are in this together!
