One day last week, I had 3 outfit changes. THREE! And each change was for a different commitment; each requiring a different "uniform" t-shirt. These kinds of tees fill my closet: church, PTO, sports teams, fundraisers, and school spirit. They are all important to me because they, in a way, tell the current story of my life. I am happy to wear these required tees whenever I need to. But on that 3 tee change last week, it occurred to me that we can be full of school spirit or follow work uniform requirements and be individuals at the same time. It just takes a little extra thought after you throw the Hanes Heavyweight on!
I chronicled my day last week to help walk through the process! First up, the work tee. I do love the color of this shirt. I added my Old Navy camo skinnies to make it more fun and add pattern to the mix. Pinstripe skinnies or polka dot skimmers would be subtle yet fun too.
I also added a denim jacket. Its comfortable and helps add structure to an otherwise unflattering cut. Another trick to help add shape is to take a chambray or denim button up top and tie it around your waist. It cinches that bulky tee right in.
I changed in to my PTO shirt next. Its more fitted (bonus). I threw on a long grey cardigan, but have gotten a lot of wear out of a long black & white striped cardigan I own and a leopard one. It can be scary to add pattern to a top that might already have logos, multiple colors or slight pattern. I recommend staying neutral. Start with patterns that have colors like beige, grey, black and white. It's more subtle, but you are still achieving a more put together t-shirt look.
I wore distressed jeans (mainly because that's all I own), but it also funks things up a bit. This PTO mom can get a little wild! Adding a colored skinny belt to a fitted tee with jeans is another easy way to personalize your look.
Usually if I'm wearing a "uniform" tee, I'm going to a ballet flat or tennis shoe situation. Instead of going basic black with your flat, try gold, silver or leopard print. Again, a way to add your personal mark to the outfit. I personally love tennis shoes, and usually go with my gold Converse or a pair of sneakers. Side note: The retro looking sneakers are everywhere now and an excellent addition to your closet!
I just got an "after the day selfie" for my third change, but it did indeed happen! Love the kelly green!
Try adding statement earrings, rolling your jeans up, stacking some bracelets, or using your favorite scarf as a belt next time you need to wear your assigned t-shirt. Adding just one thing will make a difference- I PROMISE!
